Title: Braiding statistics of loops in three spatial dimensions Speaker: Dr. Chenjie Wang Time: Jan. 28th, 2015 (Wednesday) 4:00pm Venue: Room 607, Science Building 5, Peking University Host: jfeng11@pku.edu.cn 冯济 Abstract: In two spatial dimensions, it is well known that particles or particle-like excitations can come with fractional statistics, beyond the usual dichotomy of Bose versus Fermi statistics. In this talk, I move one dimension higher to three spatial dimensions, and study loop-like objects instead of point-like particles. Just like particles in 2D, loops can exhibit interesting fractional braiding statistics in 3D. I will talk about loop braiding statistics in the context of symmetry protected topological phases, which generalize the concept of topological insulators. About the speaker: Bio: Dr. Chenjie Wang, graduated from University and Science and Technology of China in 2007 and obtained his Ph.D in physics from Brown University in 2012. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at University of Maryland in 2012-2013, and has been a postdoctoral scholar at University of Chicago since Aug. 2013. His main research interest is theoretical condensed matter physics, including topological phases (topological insulators, quantum Hall effects, fractional statistics, etc), quantum transport in mesoscopic systems (edges states of quantum Hall systems, 1D Luttinger liquids, etc), and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.
